Oye Como Va Chords

Part of the signature sound of this song is the specific voicing of the chords of the main progression on the organ. The first chord, Am7, is in this inversion: 7 – 3 – 5 – 1 – 1 (G, C, E, A, A octave above). To get the second chord, D9, the bottom note is simply lowered by a half-step, to get: 3 – 7 – 9 – 5 – 5 (F#, C, E, A, A octave above); the root is played by the bass.

I can’t count the number of times that I have heard this played incorrectly, and it is such a powerful voicing arrangement that it really does matter.

Other than picking up the same progression during the organ solo, and some very light comping during the second verse, the guitar sits out when this particular progression is played — thus allowing the power of the organ chords to predominate.
